On Sunday, September 29, 2013, Cody Linck and Zach McCrory from Save Local Now rolled out of bed at the crack of dawn. Some people may enjoy sleeping in on the weekend, but the members of Save Local Now would rather lend a helping hand.
McCrory and Linck donated their time to a local event benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society right in $LN’s hometown. Along with the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival, the LLS held its first annual Chagrin Film Fest 5K. The inaugural event was a huge success with approximately 300 runners and several volunteers. Pretty good turnout for a town of around 4,000!
Both members of $LN were race volunteers, marking the course and directing the runners. They even had to chase runners down and point them in the right direction. Linck said, “I wish I could have run the race. Watching all the competitors was really exciting! Next year we’ll have to volunteer and run.”
After the race, several runners were raving about the difficulty of the course. It was very hard since much of the 3 plus mile course was uphill. Not one of the runners would say it was not worth the effort though. The final mile of the course had a little incentive to keep competitors moving. It was called the “Mission Mile”. Every so many feet of the final mile of the race included a story of someone’s battle with blood born cancer. Those little notes of inspiration were dedicated to people that lost their struggle. Those words encouraged the runners to finish the race, honor the memory of lost loved ones and help to find a cure.
Next up is the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival, which also donates all its proceeds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Film Fest takes place from October 2, 2013 to October 6, 2013.
