You have to encourage people to download the app!  Of course you can put up the $LN window flyers up but you can even take it a little farther. Here are some really great ideas:

Community Events Every community play, concert, picnic, or town hall meeting. What better way to announce $LN at a gathering of all the town residents!
Public Libraries-Here’s a place people frequent every day! Aside from posting something in the window you could include a half sheet flyer with the QR code in every bag or in the folds of the books at checkout!
Grade Schools– Parents are always looking for ways to save money. Again, more than just posting flyers around the hallways you could send a flyer home with the kids informing their parents how they can be saving at everything from groceries, to school supplies and how they can patronize your members businesses.
YMCA’s and Recreation centers– This is another great place that is busy year round. People who frequent these sites are typically all about helping out community organizations to grow.
Colleges and Universities– Imagine a whole market of tech savvy people making a new home in a town they’ve never lived in! Even if they are local, college students are the biggest market of consumers on the planet. It is their entire way of life! And guess what? Due to the average budget of a student, they are CONSTANTLY looking for ways to save money! If that doesn’t scream opportunity, I don’t know what does! Save Local Now should be posted in the common areas and at the sports arenas. What if $LN was included in the orientation process?! This will be a massive boost to all the businesses in town. I guarantee it!
Community shared space– such as parks or town squares. The more you place the logo and QR code in front of people, the more people will be reminded to frequent their app.

Bottom Line-The more people frequent the app or site, the more options they have to save locally instead of spending money elsewhere. When a person sees a deal offering savings, they get excited. When a person sees an exclusive deal or event not available to everyone, they feel obligated to use it. Offering something to only a small handful of people can make your customer feel special, important, and appreciated. This is one of the best ways to guarantee your offer will be redeemed!

A great way to accomplish this is to use the tools already available to you. Even if you don’t keep an email list of customers (You should!) or a social media page (We can teach you!_ you can still create a VIP event or exclusive deal using Save Local Now! Here are a few ideas on how this could work for you:

Promote $LN downloads: Create a deal that is “exclusively for Save Local Now users.” In the description tell your clients that they will be asked to show the deal from their mobile device or print it out from home. Emphasize that it is only for those customers who have found the deal on $LN. This will encourage people who have found the offer to tell their friends to start using Save Local Now! This will also encourage existing customers to constantly check out your offers on $LN.

Get more social media presence: Even if you don’t have a social media page you can use Save Local Now to create a deal or event that can only be redeemed by the sharing of it by your customers. In the deal description, explain that the person must prove (either through mobile or print) that they have shared your deal or event on their Facebook or Twitter page.

Create return customers: I personally think this is a great idea for Events specifically but you could use it for Deals just as easily. Deal Bundling is when you offer two or more products or services to your customers for one cost. This is one of the most successful strategies for a business and is especially affective when created between two or more businesses and here’s why:

  • Low Marginal Costs
  • Increases Volume of unit sales
  • Exposure, exposure, exposure. With other businesses involved you get a market of customers.
  • Markets new, overstocked, or lesser known products

Consumers love the idea of getting two or even three things for one price, making bundling one of the most effective deals you can offer! There are many ways you can use bundling not only to attract customers but to help your business in other ways as well:

You can improve slow periods or seasons. Imagine you are an ice cream store who also sells coffee in a town that gets hit very hard with winter every year. You can use Deal Bundling to bring people in for your coffee when they might not normally think of it by bundling a deal with the neighboring theater!

You can advertise a new service. If you are a hair salon that recently decided to offer massage, you can Deal Bundle and offer a massage with a hair treatment between your stylist and massouse. Or if you are a book store that has recently decided to sell Movies as well, try bundling with the restaurant next door for dinner and a movie!

You can also use bundling to decrease any overstocked item. Maybe you are a novelty shop with an excess of stylish phone cases. You could always bundle with the mobile or technology store in town.

The possibilities really are endless but here is the best part:

You and all the other chamber businesses in your town are already on an app that will allow you to create these deals and offers,  reach all of your consumers simultaneously, and share them on your email list and social media websites.

WHAT?!?!? That’s right! I challenge you to open up your $LN app right now and pick three other businesses that might offer something that pairs well with your product or service. Now think of all the new customers you could get by bringing their customers into your business. I’m talking a whole new market of people who are just waiting to try your company!

Also, by bundling with other businesses in town, all the employees will be encouraged to tell more people to download the app. This means even if people aren’t interested in that particular deal they will likely be interested in future deals!

Bundling can be tricky though. Make no mistake, you wouldn’t want to combine a burger and fries with an appointment at a health clinic. You also have to work closely with another business to determine what’s a fair deal and how to collect the money. Here are some suggestions on how to make this work:

Determine the prices of what both businesses are going to offer, reduce a percentage, and offer one pre-determined price. This way customers can purchase the first item and receive a coupon for the free item at the other business. The money is just split to the determined prices later. This one looks best to a consumer because they are seeing one price and two (or three) items. It signals that they are getting something for free which drives more return on the deal.

If it is a service such as a massage or hair treatment or dental appointment, sometimes a price can be hard to pre-determine. Instead of restricting the type of service your clients can receive (ex: 30 min massage only) which might hurt the popularity of the deal, offer a percentage off.  In fact, if you don’t have a specific item you want to market, it’s best not to be too specific:

“$25 Hair coloring with the purchase of any dress $30 or more” doesn’t sound as good as “35% off Annies spa with the purchase of any item $30 or more.” and wont eliminate potential clients who might not be interested in dresses or hair coloring. Percentages discounts are beneficial because they drive more client interest and will increase the average sale total.

So now I’ve told you about one of the most popular types of deals you can offer and how it can benefit your business in a tremendous way. And you already have a free tool to get started with, so….what are you waiting for?!

If you have read any of the blogs where I mention using keywords to describe your business, or promoting your business through social media, chances are you’ve heard me mention SEO. Whether you’ve heard of SEO or not, it can be a tricky thing to comprehend. So let’s go through it.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and refers to how high up your webpage shows up in search engines when people use them to search for your product. So if you sell shoes in Racine, Wisconsin and someone does a search for “shoes, Racine” in Google, Yahoo, Bing or any of the others and your page is the first to come up, you have good SEO.

How can you change your SEO?

This is a tricky question as each search engine has its own “algorithm” to determine which websites appear higher in results. Some of the things they are looking for include:

  • Words
  • Titles
  • Number of Links
  • Words in Links
  • Reputation

Headlines: There should be headlines or highlighted keywords on your webpage. This does not mean you should put a word in bold every time you want people to find you through it as this is considered a violation, not to mention looks terrible. There are ways to lay out the content on your page in a simple and well organized manner that will let browsers know exactly what your business is about.

Sharing: The more people are sharing your Deals, Events, or business name through social media and other sites the better your website’s SEO. We create the option to share every Deal and Event through $LN so that people can in turn share them with their friends!

Social Media sites are here to stay. It seems like everyone has a Facebook and a Twitter account these days. People are following the tweets and posts of anyone who they want to hear information from whether it’s  politicians, news organizations, or their favorite celebrity. It’s a matrix type bar code that can be easily scanned by smartphones to take the user to a website or destination on the internet. It is the simplest way for a consumer to check out what they are looking at without searching for the correct information to type into their browser. They simply scan the code.

On the business end of things, a QR code can be a powerful marketing tool. You can use it to direct customers to any page you want from an email sign-up on your website, to your facebook or twitter page, or better yet, to your deals and events page on $LN! They are inexpensive to create (actually they are free for Save Local Now members) so you should try to put them on things like business cards, flyers, pamphlets, and price tags.

If you don’t think anyone is using the QR code system, think again. The app to scan a QR code is easy enough to download but most smartphones have them already installed.  According to a report by emarket, a market research firm, “nearly 20 million US adults will redeem a mobile coupon this year,” and that number is expected to double by 2013. If you need more incentive, AisleBuyer found that 82% of mobile couponers ages 25-34 said they would switch brands if they received a mobile coupon for a competing product while shopping. It’s not just the younger shoppers though, over one-fourth of all scanned QR codes were scanned by 35-44 year old consumers. The numbers are only expected to increase as well as smartphones become the norm and retailers become mobile saavy. As it is already 75% of online retailers use QR codes.

So why aren’t you using them? Not only stores, but services and restaurants can also use these codes effectively. If you think it’s hard for a business like a dentist to create a deal or event on Save Local Now, try slapping a QR code to your $LN page on a poster about what you’re offering. One of the most daunting tasks of any business owner can be telling people what you quickly while still setting yourself apart. Unless you’re a huge company with people to do this kind of stuff for you, or you’ve been doing it for years, or maybe you’re a company of poets, the task of talking about what you do is never easy. Yet, it is necessary to get it right in places like on your website, or on marketing materials, or even in conversation. The description of your business could be the make or break of whether a person decides to check you out.

First thing you should do is write down everything you want to say on a piece of paper. I mean everything. Go ahead, now’s your chance, write a whole page if you want to. Make sure you get everything in there. Doesn’t it feel great to unload all that? Now comes the hard part.

We’ve all heard of the elevator pitch concept in which you should be able to pitch your company’s concept and qualifications in the time it takes to ride in an elevator? Let’s try for 4 sentences. Yes, four sentences. Just try it and you can always go over by a sentence or two if you HAVE to. Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

  • Be Honest- if you are small, say that you are small, if you are deliberately slow, say that. Whatever it is, you obviously chose to do business a certain way for a reason and by putting it out there, you will find the right customers for you. Someone is looking for that quality which you have so tell them about it.
  • What do you do for whom and how? This is the real definition of your business. You can play it up with descriptive words in the other sentences, but one of these sentences needs to say just what it is you do. Your company does A for B by doing C.
  • Differentiate yourself. What makes you different from your competitors?  Use keywords to make yourself stand apart. There is something you do differently and you should play to that point.
  • Use a personal tone of voice and speak directly to your customers. It’s important to sound professional but it’s more important to relate to the every day client. Using a bit of humor or speaking in first person can go a long way to draw customers to your company’s personality.
  • Use keywords and be descriptive. Always use words you think people might use in search engines to find your business but you can also be descriptive. Words like distinguished, substantial, and flourishing can sound a lot better than new, small, and great. So get out the old thesaurus and be creative!

The reason I say to stick with 4 sentences is because usually people stop reading after 4 sentences, or keep reading but stop retaining information because they are still processing what they just read. You also don’t want to be too brief as you want to make sure you get the point across that you really care about what you do. So take your original description and just start cutting back using the guidelines above. Be patient and take your time…go ahead…I can wait…

So how did you do? If you really get stuck my last piece of advice is to take a step back from it, ask someone who is familiar with the business and see what they have to say about it maybe even your best customer. After all, it’s their opinion that makes the difference.

Every business needs a definition. When you created your company, you didn’t set out to do the same thing everyone else does in the exact same way and with the same prices. No, there was a mission at hand, a goal, an identity to your idea that made you want to start your story as a business owner. But you already knew that, you don’t need me to tell you, or else you wouldn’t have started the business in the first place! Now what I am here to tell you is that branding that company is one, if not the single most important things you can do for your company. I mean it, you need an image, a look, to help you show your customers in one glimpse what the important message, idea, feel of your business is, and more importantly, to help them remember it.

Let’s face it, the information world these days is a lot more like a picture story than a novel. Everywhere you look are logos, icons, and color schemes that you know better than the company that they represent. Don’t believe me? See if you can name any of the companies here:

First thing is to get an idea for what you want. Even if you have decided you want to hire a designer for your logo, you will save yourself a lot of money by doing a little brainstorming before hand. Who knows? You might surprise yourself and decide you don’t need anyone after all.  Basically there are three types of logos:

The first would be a logo that describes what the product or service is. So for a pizza company that would be a pizza or a book for a bookstore etc.

The second is a text based logo that uses a special font on the name of the company to make it more attractive.

The third is an abstract image that has nothing to do with the company name or product. An example of this is the Starbucks logo you see above. The image itself is not something one would normally associate with the name Starbucks or coffee but years of great marketing placement and repetitive branding have created the association we all have with the image.

As a small company or start-up the best thing to start with is one of the first two types of logos. As years go on and your business grows there are ways to add small changes to your logo and get it to something trendy and abstract but for now maybe it’s best to stick with something that tells the customers exactly who you are and what you do.

So now let’s start by defining what exactly you want to say about your business. The best thing to do is to sit down with a blank page and write your company name at the top. Write 8 words you can associate with your company and what you do. These can be anything from adjectives like “quick” or “vintage” to nouns you associate with your companies job such as “books” or “contracts”. This will help you to create simple word image associations in your head. If you think of an actual image for a word make sure you write that down too.

Now it’s time to narrow down your choices.

  • Decide what it is you really want to focus on, what sets you apart, and what sends a good message to the customers. If you know a certain quality that people look for in your business try to stick with imagery that will capture that idea.
  • Check out the competition’s logos. What works for other businesses in your industry and what doesn’t? How do you want to set yourself apart?
  • Remember the mediums you have. If your logo is mostly going to be on your business cards make sure it looks best at that scale. If you are planning to buy a big neon sign of your logo, make sure whatever you pick will look good in lights.
  • Don’t do what’s been done. Avoid using clip art images as they are easy to copy and unoriginal. Remember to stick with what you know and what says something about your business but get creative with it!
  • Watch the amount of detail. Too many lines or pieces and parts might not look good on any size logo. Remember your customers want to know what they are looking at. Also too many colors can be expensive when you go to print flyers or business cards. Try to keep it to a maximum of 3 colors to start.

Come up with a few sketches, or if I just scared you with the thought of drawing something even a few very key ideas with notes will do. Be specific and think about all the things we just discussed.

Then, if you don’t want to take the risk, hire a designer. By narrowing down your ideas you’ve already eliminated the back and forth in the concept stages and probably saved yourself a ton of money. Yes, design firms can be expensive but there’s probably a lot of freelance graphic artists in your area who will work for anywhere from $15 to $100 an hour depending on their experience level. Ask around and get the recommendations from other business owners you know. It’s always best to find someone who is more familiar with your field. Even if you are happy with what you designed, my recommendation is always to get a graphic designers final say on it, even if just to put it in the correct file format for printing or for a second opinion. They are the professional after all!

Once you have a logo, make sure you take steps to protect it and use it. You can trademark it at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Then use it on all mediums you have. You’ll want your customers to learn it and associate it with your business at first glance. Use it on shopping bags, business cards, menus, brochures/flyers, bills, your sign, and most importantly, your Save Local Now business profile! That is why you created it right? Good luck!!
